Abstract: The fragmentation patterns of nine di-, tri- and tetracyclic hydroquinones with potential antitumor activity were rationalized by invoking competing mechanisms that included sterically accelerated homolytic cleavage, Meerweintype rearrangements and dehydrations through elimination or intramolecular nucleophilic substitution.
